Working With WordPress Templates

WordPress Templates are pretty dynamic and diverse. This is one of the main reasons that they have become so popular in the past few years. 2015 was quite possibly one of the best years for WordPress. I’d venture to say that by far, it’s the most popular and widely used CMS in the world today.  I could be wrong about that, but I doubt it very seriously. Two of my last web design clients were looking to use WordPress Templates for their sites and that honestly inspired me to write this.

I want to help you understand just a few important things about Working with WordPress Templates.

I won’t make you wait, and will give you the 3 points I plan to hit on right now.

  1. Not One Size Fits All
  2. Not always Turn-key Solutions
  3. Tons of Options

So let’s get right into it: A few important things to know; when it comes to Working with WP Templates

WordPress Templates are Not One Size Fits All

The wordpress library of templates is full of several different layouts and it’s important that you take the time to look through them. Most will allow you to get an idea of how your site will look using each of the individual wordpress templates.  What’s pretty awesome abut the platform itself is that if you’ve already installed WordPress on your site, you can access the library from within your WordPress CMS. You just have to go to “Appearance” – and then to ‘Themes’ – to begin looking at the wordpress templates you have installed or browse the ever-growing library. Just keep in mind that these are not One Size fits all solutions.  You really need to know what your business is about and who your target market is going to be. This will help you with deciding on which template or, templates to start testing out for your site.

WordPress Templates are Not always Turn-Key solutions

A Turn-Key business is described as a business that’s ‘ready to go’ – all you have to do is stick a key in, and turn the ignition. Well this isn’t always the case with wordpress templates. Sometimes in the Preview mode, there are settings and customization that will need to happen to make YOUR website look like the preview.  Like all things in life, some will be better than others. Many templates do come with instructions on how to work With that particular template but, again, some are more clear than others.  Once again be sure to take your time when choosing a template BUT if you cannot figure it out, hire a professional immediately.

Tons of Options when It comes to WordPress Templates

With so many options to choose from, you as the owner of the website have no limitations on how your site can look. You can give your website an uplift with the push of a button (and possibly some additional customization, if needed) – you don’t have to remain locked in. For this reason, I never recommend to my clients that they purchase wordpress templates. There are several that are free and will do the job – often free templates are a better fit for you than one you’d have to pay for, And are often easier to customize.  Like always, if you should need help with choosing the right template, or having it set up to look the right way – do not hesitate to hire a professional.
